The city of Pisa is located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, on the junction of the Arno and Serchio rivers. Pisa is the capital of the province by the same name. Although the leaning tower is the most famous feature of the city, it is also the home of the University of Pisa which dates back to the twelfth century. Around Pisa, archeological remains have been found from the fifth century BC. During the Roman Empire Pisa became a prosperous military and commercial port on the Mediterranean.

Galileo Galilei airport is about 10 minutes by city bus from central Pisa. There is a railroad station at Galileo airport with connections to Florence and a 5 minute commute to the central Pisa railroad depot, from which trains depart for Rome and other Italian cities. The A-11 Genoa-Livorno road runs by Pisa.

Although many visitors only visit the leaning tower, Pisa is much more than that. Next to the tower is the Duomo, the cathedral which built the tower. The Plaza around the cathedral and tower is called the Campo di Miracoli, meaning Field of Dreams. Opposite from the cathedral and tower is the largest baptistery in Italy. The nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is the museum displaying treasures previously kept in the cathedral. Close by is the Botanic Garden, which is managed by the University of Pisa and is the oldest in Europe. The Botanic Garden is free to the public.

The large university student population has created many dining and accomodation options at affordable prices. Borgo Stretto is the upscale shopping street where budget thavelers can window shop while enjoying their Gelatto.

Among the many beautiful town squares in Pisa, the Piazza dei Cavalieri was built in the twelfth century on the grounds of Scuola Normale Superiori, which was founded by Napoleon and is one of the best universities in Italy.
