Getting to Pisa
Located in Western Tuscany, the beautiful city of Pisa, Italy has various means of transport to its gorgeous location.
By Car: Traveling by car, especially if carpooling with others, can be a very affordable. Located at the intersection of two highways, coming from the North take the A12 Genova-Pisa highway; coming from the South take the A12 Roma-Civitavecchia highway and the E80 expressway. If you come from the east from Florence you can take the A11 Firenze-Mare highway. Parking your car in Pisa can be a challenge. Their are car lots available but touring heavy tourist seasons they can be difficult to find.
By Train: Arriving to Pisa by train is one of the more common ways to get to this lovely city. Pisa Centrale is the main train station. It is well connected with frequent train service from Florence with travel time just about an hour. Pisa is also on the Rome-La Spezia, which is a main train line. The train station is very accessible to the center of the city on the south side of the Arno.
By Air: Located in Pisa, Galileo Galilei International Airport is the main airport in Tuscany. Many airlines serve the Pisa airport, and it has been noted that many of the lower cost airlines, fly into this airport, making flying an affordable option when traveling into Pisa. You can connect to many European destinations directly from Pisa. Taxi service is available from the airport.
By Bus: Traveling by bus anywhere in Italy is the cheapest way to get around, although traveling by rail is typically recommended over bus. Connections by bus to Lucca, Florence and Rome are available. The bus terminal in Pisa is located directly in front of the airport.
Once in Pisa, you have the option of taking local buses to your destinations. Attractions are located about a half hour walking distance from each other. Car rental is also available, which is a good option if you plan to travel to other areas around Tuscany.
